It’s an Automation Bubble, Not a Stock Market One

We started the investing year with the perception being rammed down our throats that robots were about to take us over. Value Investing was going to be a thing of the past. The industry was being conned into thinking that AI would exceed human performance. We (#notme) rushed for the ETF and quant BUY model button to invest in strategies that didn’t rely on humans. ETFs particularly saw heavy inflows and every post on LinkedIn was about how good AI was.

The original iconic film Wall Street (1987). It was made right in the middle of a booming economy, low interest rates, big money deals and the coined phrase “Greed is Good.” Gekko went on to make the point that greed “captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind.” He then compared the United States to a “malfunctioning corporation” that greed could still save. Why You Should Be Looking at Privatizations and Demutualizations

I’m English and grew up in the 1970s and ‘80s in London. It wasn’t a particularly fruitful time for anyone, including me, our family and the general economy. Unions had control of the workforce, and throughout the ‘70s the unions were in a battle with the Government. A new leader was brought in. She was anti-union and her focus was on giving the power back to the people. Her name was Margaret Thatcher. Whether you loved her or hated her, she changed Britain in so many ways.

    Dumb Beta – Real Returns?

The polarization and distinction between Passive and Active management seems to be narrowing. The Active guys realize that they must look at some sort of tech, and the Passive guys realize that life is more than just numbers. Smart Beta is that halfway house, but isn’t that a hybrid sort of value investing? Smart Beta funds have recorded huge growth and are on course to hit $1tn in assets by the end of 2017.

    Who is the Greatest Investor?

Really, I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve spoken to throughout the years that don’t know who the man on the right is. Do you? Frank Sinatra? Burt Lancaster? Bernie Ecclestone, maybe? Well, the man on the right has interests in all of them. His name is John C. Malone (76) and one of the few.
